How often Should You Post on Your Blog?
June 11, 2008
How often your posting to your blog is very important. Determining what the best amount of posts per day for your type of readers is key. On this blog I post once daily, with the occasional second or third post every now and then. I feel for this audience this is the appropriate frequency of posts that should be delivered.
How do I know how often I should post?
It all depends on your niche. If you have a celebrity blog, or a “newsy” type blog then chances are you post a lot more in one day, and the posts are much shorter. Celebrity and news blogs can post anywhere from 3-6 posts per day. For people with a more technical blog that requires more detail, chances are they post less often due to the length and quality of the posts written. These blogs tend to post anywhere from 3-5 times a week, so really it all depends on your niche. But if your not getting it right it could be the reason your losing subscribers – or not getting enough.
How often do the majority of people Post?
Over at ProBlogger a poll was held. The question was asked – “How many posts did you publish on your main blog in May? I was quite surprised to see the outcome. Of course this is far from the majority of people and everyone has different blogs, so they had their own reasons for why they posted as much or as little as they did.
What was the outcome?
Well the choices where 0, 1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, 71-80 and 81+
The most popular selection with 108 votes was 1-10, with 11-20 coming in second place, 21-30 came in third, 26 people had a whopping 81+ posts for the month of May, and 21 people actually voted 0. This poll however contains votes from many different people who have many different types of blogs, therefore there is no true way to determine how often you should be posting on your blog judging from this poll. However they all are bloggers and I thought it would be a good look from an overall “blogging” perspective.
Can I benefit from posting more often?
Absolutely, when you post more you create more pages for the search engine to come and index. The more you post the more potential traffic that can come your way. Also most blogging platforms send out a ping to services like Ping-O-Matic every time you post, these pings bring in traffic – the more your posting the more traffic you’d be able to get.
Also the more you post, the more you appear in your subscribers inbox, and the more familiar they become with you. This not only helps build your brand but also this reader will more likely come across a post that is useful to them, and click through to your site and become a regular visitor. This also helps you keep your subscribers, as many will unsubscribe after a while of not receiving content.
Final thoughts?
If your starting out as a blogger, I can understand the difficulty of trying to post frequently to your blog, while at the same time working on advertising, promotion, and search engine optimization. It is a whole lot to handle. What I recommend is if your starting off, then posting 3 times a week is just fine. Try to publish a post every 2 days, give yourself a couple months of doing this, like this you have a chance to optimize and get a decent ranking for your site.
Once your comfortable and traffic is steadily coming in I suggest moving up to at least one post per day, again this is depending on the site and writing style of the blog. If your publishing lengthy articles that are very useful and informative and take quite some time to write, it’s understandable to post less frequently. If your newsy, have to keep up with the world type of blog, then 3 or more posts per day would be ideal.
Try it out for yourself, see what works and what doesn’t. By looking at your subscriber count you can tell what types of articles cause a jump and which ones cause a dip.
I would love to hear how often you guys are posting to your blogs…Send in the Feedback!
