Building Your Niche
May 2, 2008
We all know your blog is best when based around one very good topic or several topics that are relevant to each other as opposed to several non-relevant topics and/or categories in your blog. You don’t want to stray too far away from the main topic, remember what people are there for in the first place. If you have a blog about “sports” how much attention or interaction do you think a post on Paris Hilton’s latest arrest is going to get? The answer is not as much as the others, despite the high traffic name (Paris Hilton) this is not why your readers went to your site to begin with, and most readers who were truly interested in finding something about “sports” would probably just ignore the post and exit your site and continue their search on that niche elsewhere.
It is very important that once you have your niche you write about the niche itself and things relevant to it, nothing more. Let’s continue our example with the “sports” niche. Obviously it’s not narrowed down to any specific sport, so the window of opportunity is open to every sport, be it basketball, football, baseball, soccer, tennis, etc, now you have a wide variety of categories to write posts on. Let’s say “baseball” is a category within your niche, you can post about the game itself, games being played this season, last season etc, basically the games played but you can also post about what you think the best baseball mitten is, by what company it’s made, which pro players prefer it, and where can your readers can buy it, all of these fall under that particular niche.
Just like that you can have a tremendous amount of ideas spring to your mind to write about, as quickly as that they just come to me as I am writing this post. In the case of the “basketball” category the same way I mentioned how you can also talk about your favorite “baseball” mitten, in the “basketball” category you can talk about your favorite basketball jersey, or headband, and sneakers that are most comfortable to play in, the possibilities are endless. These are the ways you can speak about something else that’s not directly your niche i.e “sports” but still keep it relevant so your readers are still interested.
Keeping up with your niche is very simple if your active in your niche, you will realize that trends change and new ones emerge all the time. If your in the mix and listen and read all the media you will never run out of things to write about on your niche, it’s simply not possible (unless your lazy or your niche is really unpopular.) If you would still like to go off topic you can have a separate category for it on your site away from all of your niche content. I have something similar like that on this site called “Rambling of The Mind” but I don’t stray too far away from my niche I just don’t like to.
